Tantsu® Program

Anyone entering Tantsu, whether as a new way to be with others or as the first step on a professional path, should begin with Basic Tantsu

Basic Tantsu (16 hours)
This can be taken in a single weekend or the following series of 3 hour core modules in the order listed, each of which is a complete class in itself and gives the participants something to take home and practice.

Tantsu Core 1 Posterior Cradle I (3 hours)
Learn to cradle someone from the back. After first connecting and exploring movement at the core itself, you explore up through their face, head, neck, shoulder, arm and out to their hand. Then after returning to the centers in the core, roll them over onto the other side and repeat the above. Since you remain in the same comfortable position throughout with access to the whole body, this is presented as a progression, not a fixed sequence, and you are encouraged to add whatever stretches, holds or movement you feel called to. Focus on how listening with your whole body you can allow spontaneous movements to unfold. .Can be done with anyone..

Tantsu Core 2 Posterior Cradle II(3 hours)
Review and extend what you learned in Module 1 to incorporate additional moves, stretches and exploration with the Hara, hip, legs and feet. Learn to stretch someone out for a complete finish. This cradle builds the relaxation and trust some may need before you roll them into the Core Cradle facing you to work their other side.

Tantsu Core 3 Anterior Cradle I (3 hours)
With someone facing you, cradle their core between your legs in a way that frees your own core to participate fully in rocking their back, stretches and other moves, exploring freely with both their arms and legs.

Tantsu Core 4 Anterior Cradle II (3 hours)
Review and extend what you learned in Module 3 to incorporate additional moves, stretches and exploration

Tantsu Core 5 Integration (4 hours)
Integrate the Posterior and Anterior Cradles into a single session. Be introduced to the alternate Spoon cradle.

Zen Tantsu- Integrating the Tradition (16 hours)
Prerequisite: none
Learn to integrate into a Tantsu session traditional Zen Shiatsu's leans into the back with hands and elbow in the face down position. Learn to find and hold points with your own center, and the other principles of Zen Shiatsu, and how they can be applied in Tantsu's Leg Cradle and other holds that can precede the Core Cradles. Work on the Hara. Two modules, the first focusing on Zen Shiatsu, the second on Tantsu.

Partner Tantsu (16 hours)
Deepen your Connection with those you hold close
Prerequisite: Basic Tantsu
This courses introduces new cradles and ways to work with those you are close enough to to start with the Anterior Cradle. See description

Tantsu Intensive (50 hours)
Prerequisite: none
This intensive presents the material taught in the above Basic, Zen and Partner weekends. This replaces what was formerly called Tantsu 1.

Watsu Tantsu Basic Paths (50 hours)
Prerequisite: none. Basic Watsu Path, Basic Tantsu and Basic Explorer Path.

Watsu Tantsu Explore Flow(50 hours)
Prerequisite: Basic Watsu
Half on land and half in the water.

The above two courses complement Tantsu with the new paths in Watsu that have taken back into the water what has been learned in the new Tantsu about holding and connecting to the breath and the heart's role in accessing our inner movement and creativity. These paths are introduced in Harold's book: Watsu Basic and Explorer Paths.
The Explorer Path complements both the Basic and Practitioner paths. Instead of a form that is memorized it is based on a format with which those from any level of Watsu can meet in groups of three outside of a class. This book lays out the format and the themes, one of which each brings to a meeting. The three explore as a team the principles and the applications of each's theme, which is usually a move or a way of using one's own body. Then each receives a complete session in a Round in which the first of the other two starts from the first side, the second continues from the second and both conclude by floating you between them. The format and the way it accesses our creativity has been developed and fine tuned in class after class. Both the above classes introduce this format.

Tantsu Presenter Training (50 hours)
Prerequisite: Attendance in at least 2 of the new Basic Tantsus and 1 Watsu Tantsu Explore Flow
Training and experience in presenting/instructing other somatic practices
On succesful completion of this course, depending upon your readiness you will be authorized to present one or more of the Basic Tantsu modules. You will be assigned whatever additional steps, such as co-teaching, that may be required to prepare you to present the complete Basic Tantsu.

Registering participants in a Tantsu class

All Tantsu presenters are required to register each participant in their courses. When the participant is registered the Registry automatically sends an email with a link that allows the participant to submit feedback and access the class list and whatever notes and meditations are posted for that course. Instead of distributing the class list or notes, the instructor immediately registers them on closing, thereby increasing the likelihood of their using the link to submit feedback and record their wish to host and/or be invited to Tantsu Sharings. The anonymous feedback will be available to the presenters and organizers of the course as well as the presenters' trainers. A posting fee is added as a debit to the organizer's virtual account on the Registry ($2 for each student attending a core module, $4 for each attending a weekend.) The balance in that account can be periodically reduced by payments through the internet and/or approved services (such as translating or developing material or participating on committees).

The Registry

A Registry has been set up to help make both Watsu and Tantsu available to as many people as possible. Information and upcoming courses by authorized Presenters and Instructors will be listed to the public on it. Everyone who attends modules and courses has their transcript stored on the Registry that will also list any authorizations as practitioner, presenter or instructor they earn. After each class they are emailed a link to submit feedback and access the class list and notes and materials for the class. They can indicate if they want other students from their class to access their data on the class list, to receive Tantsu newsletters and be invited to Tantsu Sharings

Registration as a Tantsu Practitioner on the Tantsu Registry

Students who meet the following requirements and maintain our ethical standards can be placed on the Registry as a Tantsu Practitioner. This is not the equivalent of state approved certification nor licensure but rather being registered and, if desired, listed to the public as approved to practice Tantsu. The requirements are:

  • Current licensure in Bodywork.
  • 100 hours- Basic Tantsu, Zen Tantsu, Partner Tantsu and Watsu Free Flow Tantsu
  • 100 hours - can include audits of the above, Presenter trainings, Tantsu 1, the 50 hour elective: Tantsu and Beyond and up to 50 hours of Zen Shiatsu..
  • Receive 10 Tantsu sessions.
  • Log 20 sessions given after completing the first 100 hours above.
  • $50 initial, and $50 annual registration fees.
  • A procedure for an on-hands demonstration of readiness is being developed.
